Christchurch community comes together to mark International Day of Older Persons

Local organisations in Christchurch will serve up a treat this Sunday, 6 October, by hosting three simultaneous afternoon teas at venues around the town to celebrate International Day of Older Persons (1 October).

Organised by Christchurch Community Partnership (CCP) in partnership with Christchurch Town Council, the events will bring together volunteers and older people from across Christchurch, including clients and former clients of CCP.

Local residents enjoy an afternoon tea at last year's International Day of Older Persons

The events will include a performance from Funky Little Choir, as well as displays from Mudeford Guides, Christchurch History Society and Red House Museum, and will be attended by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Christchurch.

Also on show will be Louise Ahrens’ incredible Vintage Idols photography display, which features five iconic photo albums recreated by local residents, and was created to mark this year’s International Day of Older Persons. The display can also been seen at community venues around the area during October (see the BCP Council website for more details)

CCP provides vital transport, support services and community activities that allow people to connect with others. Since its launch as a charity in 2011, CCP has helped over 17,000 local people, including many older people and others struggling with social isolation.

CCP Chief Executive Rev Sandra Prudom says: “We can’t wait to host our second simultaneous cream tea event for International Day of Older Persons. It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our older residents, and give younger people and families the chance to get involved and volunteer with us. We are enormously grateful to the Funky Little Choir for performing, as well as super-talented photographer Louise Ahrens for her incredible Vintage Idols display, and the other local organisations that are supporting these events.

“We are determined to put an end to social isolation in Christchurch, and these events are a great example of our community coming together to do just that.”

Nicole Baddeley, Community Engagement Officer at Christchurch Town Council said: "It's a real privilege to be able to support this event and we're so pleased to be bringing the community together in celebration of the International Day of Older Persons.

"Creating moments of connection and lasting memories for those most at risk social isolation is so important and we cannot commend the Christchurch Community Partnership enough for their ongoing work."
